Too American?

So yesterday the husband and I go out and take the dog for a hike as is our usual weekend ritual.  As we're walking Heidi, he looks at me and says,

"You really need some new pants.  You dress too American"

"Too American?  What does that even mean?"

He goes on to explain to me that we Americans run around in hoodies and sweatpants and that is perfectly acceptable in Ohio, but not so much in England.   Furthermore, he says in much kinder words that I basically have turned into a frumpy little housewife.  I was a bit offended, but I took a good hard look at myself and thought...

"Am I currently wearing really old American Apparel leggings which are covered in paint and have holes in the ass?  Do I wear a variation of old sweatpants covered in paint and full of holes almost everyday?"

Guilty.

Shit.  He's right.  I'm frumpy as hell.  But here is where the problem lies.....I take the dog hiking every morning.  Every morning she runs into mud, and then jumps on me.  Then I come home, covered in mud, and spend most my days applying to jobs online.  Where is the incentive to get dolled up?

The husband has a few theories regarding my current state of sweat pant loving.
  1. It is affecting my self esteem.  Poor self-esteem is bad for employment.
  2. Sweatpants are more acceptable in America, and in our very small town in England we need to be making good impressions all the time so we can establish ourselves here.  Sweatpants = bad first impression.
  3. I have become so focused on promoting my inner qualities when applying for jobs, that I have forgotten that outside appearances are important too.
  4. If I look better I will feel better.
I think he's right.  Now this isn't a fashion blog, lets be honest, I ate way too many whole sticks of butter as a child to ever be trendy, and I promise you won't be seeing me and my big boned self doing outfit posts anytime soon, but I need your help.  I need to create a dog walking "uniform" that I can wear every day so I no longer look like a frumpy American housewife.  In fact, I'd like to go for the American MILF look if possible?  Oh right I guess I'm not a mom.  Well trophy wife in that case.  I would love it if any of you fashionistas out there could help me with my dog walking uniform.  I need something that makes me feel pretty, is comfy, something I won't mind too much if it gets dirty, and shoes I can hike in.   Thanks for your help!!!

  1. oh gosh, this is too true as much as it hurts. i am a nanny, so spending the day with kids who will slobber, puke, spill, cough, paint, and bleed on you is no motivation for me either.
i have found that a good summer 'uniform' is some great fitting yoga pants, a vintage t-shirt, and a lightweight cardigan. top it with an ornate scarf and some necklaces, bracelets, or rings and you are feeling a LOT more chic.

Cracked up with the "whole sticks of butter" comment. as I really DID eat whole sticks of butter growing up [4-7 years old]. I am still cursing my mom for thinking it was "ok" to let me!!

I'm a jeans girl. Cozy stretch jeans. 90% of the time -- jeans.

  3. I don't think I own any sweat pants.. Maybe a few pairs of pants to wear to a fitness class or something. :P

Work definitely keeps my wardrobe in the business casual category, but what really gets me to even bother dressing up is social events... You need to go out! :)

  6. I love Victoria's Secret foldover yoga pants. They're comfy and yoga pants, but are fitting and don't look frumpy (at least I don't think so). I basically live in them! And yes, I even leave the house in them and don't feel bad about it! Good luck :)

  8. Okay, I've got a few outfit ideas for you :)

    1. Black skirt with a comfy but cute vintage T, with a belt and maybe some wellies if it's muddy out.

    2. Cute dress. There are loads of them out there right now that are crazy comfy and easy to wash, just in case anything happens to it.

    3. Skinny jeans tucked into boots with a cute flowy tank and maybe a little jacket.

Those are just off the top of my head, hopefully they'll give you something to work with :)

  9. aww funny...i'm with you though - switzerland is a little easier because the majority of hikers and walkers wear comfortable clothing, etc (although everything is the expensive kind) - but...depending on how far you walk what about leggings and a cute pair of rain boots - and maybe a cute hair wrap - and scarf! but now it's summer i guess - so yeah - i think a skirt would be cute!

  10. Thanks for all the suggestions friends! Don't you think yoga pants are in the same category as sweatpants though? I like the idea of wearing skirts but I never know what shoes to wear, I have to wear shoes I can hike it. flats won't cut it.
