Ever since we moved here I've been wanting to plant a few herbs for cooking purposes. Any food snob knows that having your own herb garden is pretty much essential. Buying the herbs fresh from the grocery store is so expensive and some always go to waste. But if they're planted the herbs will last ages. So today Nick and I headed to our local nursery to pick up everything we need to create fresh and delicious spring dishes. Carrying everything home without a car was pretty rough, but luckily my big super musclely husband carried the pot home! Oh and all together, the compost, plants, and pot only costs £20! Not bad, eh?
From top left clockwise we have our major contenders, French Parsley, Oregano, Purple Sage, Moroccan Mint, and my personal favorite Chocolate Peppermint! Oh my gosh does that stuff smell good!
We're still missing a few of the big players, like Rosemary and Basil, but we're only so buff you know. Maybe next weekend.
I hope they grow super fast so we can start using them!
ps. What are your thoughts on garden gnomes? The nursery had tons of them! They also had a snow white. What do you think, snow white and the seven dwarfs - the perfect garden accessories?
Brilliant idea! I think garden gnomes are great. Almost retro? Go for it I say.

ok kelly, you do know one of my FAVORITE memories of Tante Helene in Fouchy was her garden gnomes and snow white!!! go for it as London girl says. Now I am noooooooooooo gardener(Niki should chime in) but one thing i know. You're mint and oregano will grow like weeds and strangle everything in its path. My advice would b 2 use individual containers for those yummy herbs.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great little garden! I need to get mine started soon... I've been a bit lax in that department I'm afraid lol
ReplyDeleteOh, I love garden gnomes! I think they're adorable :)
I tried growing herbs last year, and a bunch of other things (butternut squash, eggplant, tomatoes, green beans, etc.) but they were all a bust! I apparently don't have a very green thumb!
ReplyDeleteI hope yours grow better than mine! Growing your own herbs in a great thing- and it'll make you more of a foodie than you already are.
And I'm completely in love with garden gnomes. I approve of the majority of lawn ornaments (in reduced numbers) except for kitten ones...those creep me out.
I would have to say you HAVE TO HAVE snow white and the dwarfs but garden gnomes really creep me out. I always feel like they are going to come to life, make houses underground and attack me when i come outside...but maybe thats just me
ReplyDeleteeeek suzy! We're in trouble then I guess because I don't think I can convince nick to carry any more large pots home for me haha. I guess we'll see how they do and replant them if necessary.
ReplyDeleteI'm still undecided on the gnomes issue. Though it seems everyone is all about the gnomes. I feel like they are hilarious, but then SO tacky at the same time. Maybe that is why they're hilarious? And sarah don't you think the 7 dwarfs are essentially the same thing as gnomes?
oh your own herbs will be so nice. i love basil.
ReplyDeletei am far from a food snob but i ADORE fresh herbs! i am planning on doing a few pots of basil, rosemary and thyme. but chocolate mint? OH WOW. definately might be needing some of that!
ReplyDeleteYay for fresh herbs. NOTHING like them.
ReplyDeleteGnome away lady! ;)
I planted some chive seeds this weekend! Great weather for it too!

i love garden gnomes! steve's frisbee team's mascot is a gnome so i am quite accustomed to seeing them everywhere. i think they are a great addition to a garden, especially if you can find a solar powered one that lights up at night :)
